Our English Classes

Our men’s and women’s ESL classes meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10am-12pm. Registration dates are nearly here for the spring semester, so don’t miss it! Most levels usually fill during registration, and late registration therefore becomes impossible for most levels. REGISTRATION
Spring semester registration will be on January 8, 9, 13, and 15 in the morning only from 10-11am. We are volunteers serving because of the love of God; we are not employees of the church, so you cannot come late or on a different day — we will not be at the church!
You may come on any one of the registration days to enroll in class. However, our childcare fills very quickly. So people needing childcare should come on the first day of registration.
REGISTRATION
Since class already started, you will have to register on your first day. The cost is still the same, since our teachers are volunteers. You are paying for your curriculum (books), not your teacher!
General registration for the Fall 2024 semester happened in mid-August and is complete. Late registration MAY be possible by coming to a class day, depending on the level tested into, but
- The student may face a considerable wait to be tested (our volunteers will be busy TEACHING, not placement-testing like during registration!);
- There will be a $20 late fee, bringing the total to $70;
- Childcare is FULL — absolutely NO EXCEPTIONS;
- Once tested, you may or may not be admitted, according to how full your particular level is. We are brokenhearted to turn eager students away, but we want to provide quality learning opportunities to our current students!
If you don’t make it into Fall 2024 class, check this website in October or November for information about registration for Spring 2025 during January. Students desiring to bring small children should prioritize coming on the FIRST day of registration, as childcare fills VERY quickly.
Registration was completed in early January and we are full for the spring semester (until May). Regular registrations during August and early January are when our team is devoted to registration. Now our team is devoted to teaching our classes, so we have exceedingly limited personnel to administer placement tests. It is even possible you may be turned away on any given day and asked to return a different day to test, as we can only administer a limited number of placement tests per day with limited personnel. If you test into a level that is full, you will be placed on a waitlist.
COST
The cost (fees) for a semester is $50. If you don’t have $50, come to registration anyway and talk to us about your situation. Our teachers are volunteers, so you are paying for your curriculum (books), not your teacher! Please bring your fees to registration day. We can accept cash only.
CHILDCARE
We have a nursery and a playroom for small children, but the children’s program becomes full very quickly. If you need childcare while you study, we recommend coming on the FIRST day of registration, January 8.
DETAILS
For the comfort of our students, our classes are separated by gender. We have eleven classes: Five levels of phonics for women learning to read, four levels for women who can read, and two levels for men.
We are a Christian organization, so we include a story each day from the Holy Bible (Taurat, Zabur or Injil-e Sharif) in our classes. Most are stories Catholics and Muslims usually already know. Many are told in both the Holy Bible and Qur’an.
While we welcome students from all linguistic backgrounds, historically more than 90% of our students have spoken Dari or Pashto.
LOCATION & PARKING: Our classes meet downtown at New City Fellowship Church, near the Hazel Hill housing complex. The address is 200 Prince Edward Street, Fredericksburg, VA, 22401. Don’t park on the street; the police might give you a ticket! The parking lot is behind the church building. One entrance is on Dunmore Street/Gunnery Road near the HeadStart preschool (Walker-Grant Center). To enter the parking lot, drive west on Dunmore Street (toward the Walker-Grant Center and preschool) to the intersection of Dunmore Street and Ferdinand Street. Look for the open yellow gate on your right side. At the gate, turn right into the parking lot. For details, visit our parking page.
